Why choose Single-mode optical fiber G.657.A2
The fiber-optic solution by SkyCraft is designed to carry out combat missions in areas with extremely dense enemy electronic warfare (EW) and electronic intelligence (ELINT) activity. The primary use case is strike FPV drones and reconnaissance platforms where the use of a radio link is either impossible or dangerous for the operator.
This solution enables UAV units to:
- Operate under “radio silence” conditions without revealing the operator’s position through radio emissions.
- Engage targets protected by powerful EW “domes” that jam standard frequencies such as 433/915 MHz and 1.2/2.4/5.8 GHz.
- Conduct flights in complex terrain (ravines, urban environments, etc.) where direct radio line-of-sight is unavailable, while fiber optics ensure a stable connection regardless of obstacles.
Key features of G.657.A2 fiber optics
The use of the G.657.A2 standard is a key engineering advantage. Unlike standard optical fiber, this type offers increased resistance to micro-bending and critical bend radii. This is crucial when deploying the cable from a spool at high flight speeds, where the cable may catch on tree branches or structural elements.
Ultra-low attenuation: The optimized structure allows signal transmission over distances of up to 25 km without intermediate amplifiers, maintaining perfect quality of digital or analog video streams.
Tensile strength: Despite its minimal thickness to reduce weight, the fiber features a specialized protective coating capable of withstanding dynamic loads during aggressive drone maneuvers.
Compact form factor: The fiber is supplied on specialized spools integrated into the release or mounting system of RMD-series drones, ensuring smooth, tangle-free deployment.
Advantages of this model compared to other solutions
The main advantage of our fiber-optic solution is guaranteed connectivity where any firmware tweaks or frequency hopping fail. Compared to traditional FPV systems based on ELRS or Crossfire, a fiber-optic link cannot be intercepted or remotely jammed.
As the enemy increases the power of jammers, a fiber-optic drone simply ignores them, since the signal is transmitted as light pulses inside a glass core.
The absence of radio interference (“snow” on the screen) allows the operator to see the target with maximum clarity, even at the moment of close approach to an EW emission source.
Long-range operation without repeaters. For distances of 20+ km, an onboard repeater is usually required. Fiber optics enable direct operation at such ranges, simplifying mission preparation and reducing the number of deployed platforms.
